Are we reducing speeds too quickly?

Any initiative on our roads that aims to save lives has to be applauded – as long as it works.

A recent analysis of government data, by the Institute of Advanced Motorists, shows that serious accidents on roads with 20mph speed limits have increased by 26% in the last year. In the same period there was a decrease in the number of accidents on 30mph and 40mph roads.

As more and more roads are being given a 20mph limit, the government and councils need to look carefully at the effectiveness of those decisions – and consider more long-term ways of creating safer environments.

It seems that putting up a 20mph speed limit sign won’t be enough.

It’s alright if it’s all white

White cars used to be the prerogative of weddings, and the motorway police. Otherwise best avoided, unless you fancied cleaning them every week. But there are so many white vehicles on the roads now. In fact, white has been on the rise with a vengeance since 2008. And now it’s become the most popular colour for new cars. Last year it was chosen by nearly a quarter of buyers.

Some people say it’s because of our economic times, things being more monotone and less colourful. Others say that the paints are simply better, particularly the pearlescent finishes.

But I think it’s down to one thing. The growth in widely available, inexpensive hand car washes. There always seems to be a big queue at my local car wash, so they must be doing good business.

Our hard working, good-hearted king of the road, who loved his job, and the freedom it gave him. Well, it seems that lorry driving isn’t as attractive as it once was.

The current shortage of drivers has got the media buzzing with stories of empty supermarket shelves throughout the winter months. The Road Haulage Association is lobbying government to make a substantial contribution towards the cost of acquiring a vocational driving licence.

DVSA figures suggest that there are 50% less drivers taking tests than five years ago. And with the cost of acquiring an HGV licence at around £3,000, it’s not an easy option for young drivers.

Let’s hope the government can find some money to put behind the wheel. After all, as someone or other says, every little helps…
